Post your answer to the Assessment Practice Question as a comment to this post BELOW.
In case you missed it the Question states;
Simpler, direct, and much more neat
is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle
of the twentieth century, and leave him there.
What comment is Brock making about living in modern society?
Use the P.E.E.R acronym to structure your response.
The quote “simpler, direct and much neater” stated by Brock is commenting on modern society by showing different techniques on how to kill someone, it lists 5 ways to kill someone. All the stanzas have reference to something else and it doesn’t mean what it says. For example the 1st stanza where it talks about “make him carry a plank of wood p a hill and nail him to it” we could understand this has it is or we could think in dept and know this is how Jesus died. All the stanzas are from the oldest to the most current, showing how far society has come.
ReplyDeleteThe comment that Brock is making about living in modern society is to show how far we have come in society, from the different ways of killing a man.
Does your response follow the PEER acronym completely? I don't think it does.
ReplyDeleteYou need to reference the poem in terms of WHAT it says about the way in which we live our lives.
Specifically, you need to talk about WHY our society is slowly killing us; as is stated by Brock in the last stanza.
What comment is Brock making about living in modern society?
ReplyDeleteBrock is saying that the society we live in now is that bad that if you leave a man here he will die.
He shows this by saying “Simpler, direct and much neater is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century, and leave him there.”
It helps the audience realise how bad the twentieth century is to live in these days and makes people want to make it a better place to live in
Brock is making a comment about how bad it is living in today’s modern society.
This is how can a man being left in the 20th century survive.
ReplyDeleteThe subject I am trying to communicate is how the easiest form of death can be getting a man, putting him in the 20th century and leaving him there. The quote is trying to say that living in modern society these days is hard and very difficult to keep up with because of the changing laws and technology. Of course for people that have been brought up they have no choice but to know this technology. But for people that have been around for a long time the easiest type of suffering would be to put him there so. But it necessarily doesn’t mean physical death. It’s more of a mental death.
‘Simpler, direct and much neater’ the social comment that Brock is making about modern society is that modern society will soon be the death of us. In the last stanza of the poem ‘Five ways to kill a man’ it states that leaving a man in the twentieth century would eventually kill him that would make the reader think and reflect on their lives. This would certainly mean the way in which we live would one day kill us with excessive use of resources, pollution of every form and the hiatus of Chuck Norris.

ReplyDeleteWhy is it so bad living in the 20th Century? Give me a reason. Otherwise a good response.
Joey
The only thing your response is missing is an actual quote. Otherwise well done!
The comment that Brock is trying to make about living in today’s society is that we are basically killing ourselves in the way of how people are living in our society. Our society today is pointless because people in our society are doing nothing with their lives and effecting human society. “Simpler, direct, and much neater is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the 20th century, and leave him there.” This is supporting my argument because it is easier to make him die in society because it is easier and doesn’t require any effort because he is killing himself in society. The effect of this is that leaving the man is that they themselves are killing themselves and physically and mentally. Brock is making the comment about how bad our society is running and how the people in the society is living.

ReplyDeleteI do believe that Chuck Norris' absence in the modern world is slowly killing us. We really need his guidance. Maybe he can team up with Captain Planet to stamp out pollution? I'm sure Hello Kitty would lend a hand.
Your response is great. You're only missing a summary at the end. Refer back to the question at the end of your paragraph.
Well Done Elias. Birrong Premier League would be proud!
ReplyDeleteEdwin brocks 5 ways to kill a man makes a strong statement about the world we live in.“Simpler, direct, and much more neat is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century, and leave him there” is a good example of how” our world is potentially deadly. Saying that it is “Simpler, direct, and much neater” is insinuating that in a time of guns planes and weapons of mass destruction it is a very dangerous and poisonous world. Edwin brocks is saying that in this world we live in it is deadly and can leave a man dead without any one having to do anything. If he can be killed “Simpler, direct, and much more neat” in our society if “he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century” that really says a lot about the world we live in and the hands were given.
ReplyDeleteBrock tells us there are many awkward and strange ways to kill a man. His last paragraph “Simpler, direct, and much more neat is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century, and leave him there” is telling us that the way we are living in modern society is unfair, ambiguous and unhealthy. One example that is relevant to my argument “In an age of aeroplanes, you may fly miles above your victim and dispose of him by pressing one small switch.” This telling us that it is now easy to kill a man by, for example, pulling A trigger of A gun on A person’s head can kill A man. It is also telling us that as technology advances, there will always be pros and cons. As I said, the way we are living in modern society is unfair, ambiguous and unhealthy. It is now so easy to kill someone due to technology.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff Cp'n Josh!
ReplyDeleteFANTASTIC MATTHEW! ONE OF THE BEST SO FAR! AND THE ONLY ONE TO USE A QUOTE OTHER THAN MINE. WELL DONE!

ReplyDeleteThe comment which Brock made about living in the Morden society is that we are living in a bad age anything can happen at any time.
ReplyDeleteHe illustrates this when by mentioning “Simpler direct and much neater is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century and leave him there”
The poem tells us of how it was hard living in the twentieth century and how used to die and this days people wants to make it a better living place.
Overall, Brock demonstrates how it was hard to live back then if you don’t get killed you will die somehow.
People have always tried to hurt and maybe take it to the next step and kill each other for whatever reason. You may think that life today is much more peaceful and safe but it’s not, actually, it’s much worse since we have evolved and become more intelligent. We have created more and more destructive weapons to so called “protect ourselves”. As Edvin Brock wrote in his poem “you can make him carry a plank of wood to the top of a hill and nail him to it.” To “Dispensing with nobility, you may, if the wind allows, blow gas at him.” And 20 or so years from now “In an age of airplanes, you may fly miles above your victim and dispose of him by pressing one small switch.”
ReplyDeleteBrock is saying that the modern world we live in today is just getting worse and worse with us people slowly killing each other. Polluting the world we live in, disrupting food chains by wiping out species of animals, eating to the point where we can no longer function properly and creating weapons of mass destruction for our “protection”. These are only a few of the ways in which we are killing ourselves and each other in our society today. Being stubborn, carless and irresponsible as a community will bring our race to a halt.
The comment that Brock is making when he wrote “Simpler, direct, and much more neat
to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century, and leave him there.” Could be said in other words as “let the man slowly kill himself in the middle of the twentieth century.”
Edwin Brock is making a strong statement about this corrupted world that we’re living in now and how it can deadly in some ways.
ReplyDelete“Simpler, direct, and much more neat is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century, and leave him there”.
The quote” Simpler direct and much more neater... living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century...” stated by Edwin Brock in the poem “5 ways to kill a man” is directed straight to the audience explaining the period we’re living in is a natural result of destruction.
We may all think that all these new and distant high technological inventions and advancements developed are going to save humanity from disasters but the money spent on ammunition and mass destructive weaponry doesn’t seem to show us any prediction of a staggering happy ending. Human beings in this century are the apex predators of all other living forms on this earth, the amount of extensive pollution we’re causing is threatening the ecosystem and the overloaded population in our planet earth is causing many biological diseases.
In conclusion, this stanza stated by Edwin Brock helps the audience realise the shocking truth in the 20th century what can we humans possibly do in the distant future to deliver this wrath upon ourselves.

ReplyDeleteWhilst I share your enthusiasm Kevin this is probably not the forum to vent your feelings of love and adoration for all that is Winston!
ReplyDeleteThe poem “5 ways to kill a man” is commenting on society by at first telling us many awkwarad and strange ways to kill a man, at the end of the poem he quoted “simplier, direct and much more neat is to see that he is living somewhere i the middle of the twentieth century” shows that he is living in an unfair society and we don’t value life as much as we should. One quote to support my answer is “you can make him carry a plank of wood up a hill and nail him to it” why do all this just to kill a man ? this shows us how far technology and society has advanced. The poem also uses an historical allusion to show the different ways to kill a man and how far society has come. The social comment that this poem is making on our society today is that the technology is there and people may use it for the good or bad, but in this case the we are using it for the bad.
